A note on choice submissions

Dear students,

Thank you for submitting you project choices form. I have received a complete form for each group.

Here is a small request: when submitting forms next time, please do not change the format of the file (from .xls to .doc for example), or the format of the form (color, size, shape...etc) given to you. It would be easier to automate some tasks if the format across files is uniform. There will be plenty of room for creativity elsewhere in you project :)

Thanks,
Aciel

Project 1

Topic: Semantic Advertising Network

General field of study/domain: Semantic web, web content analysis, e-commerce

Supervisor: Dr. Lilac email: lilac2k@yahoo.com

Description:

Today, money is pouring into the Internet and advertising. Basing ads around keywords on a page, as Google AdSense does, can yield wrong results. For instance, a page about a trip to Hawaii that mentions taking photos might display camera ads rather than travel ads. Companies are looking for innovative ways to create more out of their investment in content.

Semantic advertising applies semantic technologies to online advertising solutions. The function of semantic advertising technology is to semantically analyze every web page in order to properly understand and classify the meaning of a web page and accordingly ensure that the web page contains the most appropriate advertising. Semantic advertising increases the chance that the viewer will click-thru because only advertising relevant to what they are viewing, and therefore their interests, should be displayed. (source: Wikipedia)

The aim of the project is to boost advertising networks with semantic technology and build an advertising network with more relevant ads to view. This is done by relating the meaning of text (page context) on web pages with ads content instead of text, named "semantic advertising" – the next generation of ads network. The result is an ad that is highly targeted, is closely related to structured and unstructured content in a brand safe environment, and maximizes consumer engagement.

The project needs to investigate different Semantic algorithm for real-time semantic analysis of web pages to identify their true meanings and serve relevant display ads.

Keywords: advertising, semantic web , web content analysis, semantic algorithms.

IEEE 802.11 legacy is the standard for wireless local area network (WLAN) communication and has several amendments such as 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g, as well as 802.11n. The IEEE 802.11 operates using the 2.4GHz band and supports data rate up to 2Mbps. However, the new amendment 802.11n defines two 20 MHz bandwidth streams in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and supports a rate up to 300Mbps. The 802.11n offers new features such the multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) technology which uses several antennas to move multiple data streams.

Ns2 simulator uses 802.11 as the MAC layer protocol. However, 802.11n gives more facilities for wireless networks so it the desired MAC protocol. The project will enable the students to experiment with this state of the art technology and involves coding 802.11n and implementing it in the network animator ``nam'' to visualize it. We will then post the code on the simulator development site under KSU name which will be helpful to other researchers and will make people aware of some of our activities and interest.

Programming Languages Involved:

  • For using existing network elements implemented in ns2 and run simulations you need to know OTCL (the interface)

Topic: Multimedia environment for encouraging vocalization of children with Autism

General field of study/domain: Application oriented project in the field of Graphics & Multimedia and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)

Supervisor: Dr. Areej email: ksu.cap312@gmail.com

Description:

This project involves developing a rehabilitation system for Autistic children. Autism is a developmental disorder affecting communication skills. Difficulties in speaking affect many aspects of their lives as well as the lives of their caregivers, parents and professionals supporting them. This project aims to develop a real-time audio and visual feedback system to facilitate their vocalization. Research has shown that Human-to-Computer Interaction is more effective with this user population than Human-to-Human interaction. Moreover, we know that fascination with spinning and flashing objects is a hallmark characteristic of this user population. The proposed system provides computer-generated feedback for vocalizations (such as increasing the speed and size of spinning objects) to visually engage users in the activity of vocalization. The envisioned contribution of this project is to understand the potential of computer-based rehabilitation programs in positively influencing the communication abilities of children with Autism.

Project 15

Topic: Memory Booster: Multimedia games for children with Dyslexia and ADD

Supervisor: Dr. Areej email: ksu.cap312@gmail.com

Description:

This project involves developing a computer-based stimulating adventure game aimed at enhancing the working memory skills of children with developmental disorders such as dyslexia and attention deficit disorder (ADD). Weakness in working memory is a key characteristic of dyslexics and children with ADD. The game teaches well-defined strategies established in the field of cognitive psychology; namely, rehearsal, visual imagery, creating stories and grouping. Research has shown that computerized versions of these games have been effective in engaging children and improving their memory skills. However, these systems exist in English or other Latin-based languages which render them incompatible for remedial programs for children in our local context. The proposed system involves developing a stimulating game environment with an Arabic interface and within the cultural and social context of target users. The envisioned contribution of this project is filling the gap of remedial interactive programs for children with developmental disorders that meet their specific needs in terms of language and cultural context.
